Meet the team

Ruben Verresen
PI
While my training is in condensed matter theory (see this accompanying page for biographical information), I am excited to explore the intersection with other fields of physics—such as high-energy physics via the emergence of gauge theories in entangled systems, or with atomic physics to propose the realization of many-body phenomena in engineered quantum systems. When I am not catching up on emails, I enjoy doing physics, listening to podcasts, and learning about the mind.

Ramanjit Sohal
Postdoctoral Researcher
I am broadly interested in topological phases of matter and using probes of entanglement to characterize many-body systems both in and out of equilibrium. I obtained my BSc at the University of Toronto in 2016 and my PhD in Eduardo Fradkin’s group at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2021. I then worked in Shinsei Ryu’s group at Princeton University as a postdoc from 2021-2024 before returning to the Midwest. Outside of physics, I enjoy reading, cooking, and dabbling in martial arts.

Ryohei (Rio) Weil
PhD student
I am broadly interested in research directions emerging from the collision of quantum information and condensed matter theory, such as understanding quantum phases of matter as resources for computation and error correction. My academic journey started with my BSc and MSc at the University of British Columbia, and I am excited to continue to learn and share inspiration for physics at UChicago. I also love to connect with people through board games, coffee, movies, and a cappella.

Rossoneri Jing
PhD student (w/ Jiang group)
I am a PhD student in physics, coadvised by Prof. Liang Jiang. I obtained a BS from Northwestern University and an MASt (Part III) from the University of Cambridge. My research focuses on error correction in topological quantum computation.
